Fold the sound, not filter it

Where Moog filters sound, Buchla folds and twists waveforms. Join tamiX, director of Beijing’s Modular Commune, for a close look at how the Buchla 200e makes sound.
Created by Don Buchla in San Francisco in the early 1960s, this synthesizer uses touch plates instead of a keyboard. A complex oscillator folds waveforms to create harmonics, while a low-pass gate gives the sound a plucked quality. Often called “West Coast” synthesis, it contrasts with Moog’s approach of shaping sound with filters.
Based in Beijing, tamiX (Tang Nan, 汤楠) is an electronic music improviser and visual artist. A Buchla-supported artist, tamiX mainly performs with the Buchla 200e. tamiX is the director of Modular Commune, a Beijing modular event running since 2015, and has performed at Superbooth 2024 in Berlin and FoM Tokyo 2025. tamiX has led Buchla 200e workshops at SchneidersLaden in Berlin, in Tokyo and Osaka, and at Knobcon in the US. The album X New Year was released on Detroit Underground in 2022.
Explore how the Buchla 200e generates sound through tamiX’s explanations and performance.

Drum Trinity: Inside the Design

Léonard Steyaert, firmware and DSP developer at Shakmat Modular, presents the design philosophy and inner workings of the Drum Trinity: three distinctive drum synthesizers, each with its own approach to electronic percussion.
Shakmat is a module company in Brussels, Belgium. Founder François Gaspard and designer Steve Hackx have worked together from the start, with engineers, designers and musicians making modules as one team. Module names come from chess and myth; Battering Ram means a siege ram.
From the Battering Ram, a straightforward, great-sounding bass drum developed in collaboration with Ableton’s Marc Résibois, to the analog-digital hybrid hi-hat Archer’s Rig and the versatile digital snare drum Lancer’s Lash, this workshop explores how these instruments were conceived and how they work under the hood.
Discover the unique features that make each module stand out, including extensive randomization possibilities, velocity-sensitive control, and built-in memory functions. Whether you’re interested in sound design, modular percussion, or the technical side of synthesizer development, this workshop offers an inside look at the ideas and engineering behind Shakmat’s approach to drum synthesis.
Sunday 15 November, 14:00–15:00 on 2F.
Open to all visitors.
The hands-on zone pauses during the demo.

A digital oscillator that stacks voices or groups them into chords to create a stereo sound. It can make wide pads from a single note and chord riffs, suiting anyone who wants layered voices from a small rack.

A sampler that records and plays back audio and CV on eight channels. You can edit how each channel plays and call it up with external triggers, building drum patterns and recorded movement together.

A module that generates clocks and modulation locked to one tempo across eight outputs. Each output's rate and waveform can be set separately, which suits building drum triggers and filter movement within the same beat.

A standalone semi-modular instrument combining analog sound circuitry with dedicated software control. Two sawtooth-core analog oscillators, a wavefolder and a resonant low-pass filter.

A stereo filter that digitally recreates the character of three different filter circuits. Offsetting the left and right cutoff changes brightness and sense of space, suiting anyone who wants to shape a stereo source with one module.

A kick drum voice with control over pitch sweep, click and drive. It also outputs its volume envelope to move other modules, suiting anyone who wants to design the kick and the movement around it together.
