DOKKAEBI

DOKKAEBI is a two-person sound performance team made up of vocalist yoorae and modular synthesist Deja. Through site-based performances in natural and urban environments, they explore the intersections of place, sound and spirituality. In this process, uncontrollable environmental elements are not something to be excluded but act as co-agents of the performance. Their recent work focuses on separating the notion of spirituality from specific religious doctrines and systems of practice, and reconstructing it as sensory experience. They interpret in musical language the non-verbal states that arise through meditative repetition, sustained tones and contact between body and environment, and seek to present them as a universal experience open to anyone. Alongside performances, they keep records in video and conversation, and treat the discourse that follows a performance as an extension of the work.
